Lynwood Mayor Jada D. Curry has secured a decisive victory in her bid for re-election, earning a second term in office with strong community support. Her campaign, built on a foundation of economic growth, public safety, and financial responsibility, resonated with voters, who once again placed their trust in her leadership.
Curry, who made history in 2021 as Lynwood’s first African American female village president, celebrated her re-election with supporters at the Lynwood Bowling Center, where chants of “Four more years!” filled the room. According to unofficial results from the Cook County Clerk’s Office, Curry defeated challenger Detonya Armstrong with 62% of the vote, further solidifying her mandate to continue leading the village forward.
“It’s been a challenging journey, but we’re here,” Curry said, addressing an energized crowd. “I am extremely grateful to the residents of Lynwood, and I’m looking forward to four more years of hard work.”
A Track Record of Progress
Over the past four years, Curry has spearheaded major initiatives to boost Lynwood’s economic landscape. Her administration has successfully attracted several new businesses, including Dollar General, Dunkin’ Donuts, Pride Car Wash, Fresh Market, and BaM, bringing both convenience and economic vitality to the village.
In addition to commercial growth, Curry has prioritized public safety and infrastructure improvements. Under her leadership, Lynwood secured over $5 million in grant funding, enabling the village to enhance public services. One of the most notable achievements has been the expansion of emergency services, with the local fire station now operating 24/7 and adding two new ambulances to its fleet.
Curry also acknowledged the financial challenges she inherited upon taking office, citing significant village debt as a hurdle she and her team have been working to overcome. “I inherited a ton of debt,” Curry said. “It wasn’t going to go away in one term, but we’ll continue to chip away at it and try to manage it.”
Looking Ahead: A Vision for Lynwood’s Future
As she embarks on her second term, Curry remains committed to addressing key areas of growth and improvement, outlining a vision that includes:
Infrastructure Upgrades – Continuing road repairs, enhancing drainage systems, and modernizing public facilities.
Economic Development – Attracting more businesses and job opportunities while fostering local entrepreneurship.
Parks & Recreation – Expanding recreational spaces, upgrading playgrounds, and improving walking and biking trails.
Public Safety Enhancements – Strengthening police and fire department resources to ensure a safer community.
Community Engagement – Hosting more events, fostering transparency, and ensuring all residents have a voice in Lynwood’s future.
With the motto “Progress You Know, Results You’ve Seen,” Curry has positioned herself as a leader focused on tangible outcomes. Supporters, including longtime Lynwood resident Darnell Boxley, praised her efforts in making the village a better place.
“She’s bringing businesses, she’s out in the public talking to people,” Boxley said. “I think she’s doing a great job.”
A Hard-Fought Victory
Curry’s re-election campaign was not without its challenges. Opposing her bid was The Lynwood Choice Team, led by Armstrong, a registered nurse and Lynwood resident of 10 years. While Armstrong ultimately fell short in the polls, she emphasized the need for greater civic participation.
“I hope that we can all come together for the village,” Armstrong said, expressing disappointment over the 17% voter turnout. “No matter how it goes, we have to voice our opinions better. We have to come out and vote.”
Despite the competition, Curry and her Lynwood Strong slate remained focused on their mission, never taking voter support for granted. Reflecting on advice she received from Glenwood Mayor Ronald Gardiner, Curry said she approached the race with determination.
“I felt like that was good advice, because if you’re overly confident you’ll get lazy, and we never got lazy,” she said. “We’ve been out here doing the work, and now we’re seeing the fruits of our labor.”
As Lynwood moves forward under Curry’s leadership, residents can expect a continued focus on economic growth, community development, and fiscal responsibility. With her second term secured, Curry is poised to build upon the foundation laid in her first four years, ensuring Lynwood remains a thriving and resilient community.
